COTU to NPO: Stop Backing Student Interference in SoO and Assam Rifles Affairs

Feb 26, 2025: The COTU has criticised the recent press statement issued by the Senapati District Women Association and the Poumei Naotumai Me (Poumei Naga Women Union), calling it a reaffirmation of their alleged misunderstanding of the ongoing ethnic conflict.

According to the COTU, the recent statement of SDSA was based on what it described as “concocted narratives” from the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA).

The COTU urged organisations that have so far claimed neutrality in the Kuki-Zo and Meitei conflict to maintain their stance and refrain from acting as spokespersons for any particular community, warning that such actions could incite further hostility.

Additionally, the COTU called on the Naga People’s Organization (NPO) to refrain from endorsing student bodies that, according to COTU, have no legitimate authority to interfere in matters concerning Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups or the operations of the Assam Rifles.

Instead, COTU stressed that these student organisations should focus on their primary responsibility—ensuring the welfare of students in Senapati.

The statement concluded with an appeal to the NPO to advise the SDWA and Poumei Naotumai Me to avoid actions that could escalate tensions and to prioritise peace in the region.
