Curfew Partially Lifted in Churachandpur Amid Hmar-Zo Tensions

20 March, 2025: The curfew in Manipur’s Churachandpur district has been partially lifted following recent inter-tribal clashes that escalated tensions in the region.

According to the district administration, residents, particularly in Churachandpur town, are now allowed to procure essential items and services between 7:00 AM and 4:30 PM on Thursday. However, sensitive areas such as Kangvai, Samulamlan, and Sangaikot sub-divisions remain under strict curfew due to continued security concerns.

Police and security forces have heightened surveillance measures, including flag marches and strict actions against curfew violators and troublemakers.

Various civil society organizations, MLAs, church leaders, and stakeholders have appealed for peace amidst the unrest.

Meanwhile, in a move towards stability, 12 Kuki-Zomi and Hmar organizations in Churachandpur have agreed to establish a joint peace committee aimed at monitoring the situation and preventing further misunderstandings.

The recent escalation in tensions stemmed from a violent clash on Tuesday night, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.

Authorities remain on high alert as efforts continue to stabilize the district and prevent further outbreaks of violence.
