A tragic incident has shaken Bishnupur district, where a Class IX girl was found hanging at her home on Friday morning while her mother was away on fieldwork and her father was not at home.
Local sources indicate that cyberbullying or harassment, following the circulation of a video allegedly recorded without her consent, may have driven the girl to take this extreme step.
In response, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed immediately, demanding the identification and arrest of those responsible and holding them liable for abetment to suicide. Moirang Police have registered a case, and the girl’s body was taken to RIMS mortuary for a post-mortem conducted under magistrate supervision, with video documentation of the procedure.
As part of ongoing protests, students and local residents staged a sit-in at Thamnapokpi Bazar from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., holding placards with slogans such as “Stop Cyber Harassment,” “End Online Abuse, Protect Our Daughter,” and “Justice for Kh. Rojiliya.” The JAC warned that stronger protests will follow if the accused are not booked promptly.
The incident has sparked widespread concern, highlighting the urgent need to protect minors online, prevent cyber harassment, and promote digital safety awareness across the district.
