Ngangom Uttam Singh Urges Students to Choose Discipline Over Distraction
Imphal, February 26 (Thursday): The Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Chingmeirong, marked the grand opening of its DB Sports Festival with a vibrant ceremony attended by students, parents, alumni and distinguished guests.
Joint Secretary (Tribal Affairs & Hills), Government of Manipur, Ngangom Uttam Singh graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The programme was attended by Zonal Education Officer Sucheta Khumukcham and Assistant Inspector of Schools (Zone II) Bani Athokpam as Guests of Honour. Principal Fr. Hans Igness SDB was also present along with members of the teaching staff and Sports Committee.
The ceremony began with a welcome and felicitation programme, followed by the breaking of the flag by the Chief Guest and lighting of the torch by ZEO Sucheta Khumukcham. A Guard of Honour was presented by the four House contingents, while students of Classes 8, 9 and 10 participated in the March Past.
In his welcome address, Principal Fr. Hans Igness highlighted the importance of sports in character formation and holistic development of students.
The event featured a series of cultural and athletic displays including a Dumbbell Dance by Classes 6 and 7, a presentation titled “Social Media Mania” by students, Bumble Bee dance by Classes 3, 4 and 5 (girls), Fusion Dance by the four Houses, and Aerobics by Classes 4 and 5 (boys).
Addressing the students, Chief Guest Ngangom Uttam Singh delivered a motivational message focusing on discipline and responsible use of social media.
He cautioned students against excessive use of social media, describing it as a “necessary evil” that can become harmful if overused. Referring to growing global concerns, he mentioned that many countries are considering restrictions for children below 16 years. He encouraged students to watch the documentary The Social Dilemma on Netflix to understand how social media algorithms work and why they are addictive.
Emphasising that discipline builds character, he compared personal growth to the story of bamboo, which develops strong roots before showing visible growth. He urged students not to be discouraged by slow progress, reminding them that consistent effort and strong foundations lead to long-term success.
“Play well, play fair and play like a champion,” he concluded, wishing all participants the very best.
Assistant Inspector Bani Athokpam formally declared the DB Sports Festival open, followed by the Vote of Thanks delivered by the Sports Committee. The day concluded with track events for students.
The programme was coordinated by Sports Convenor Aman Golmei and Co-Convenor Pritam Singh under the guidance of Principal Fr. Hans Igness SDB.
