The Indian Dental Association (IDA), Manipur State Branch, has demanded strict protection measures for medical professionals after a practising dentist was reportedly manhandled during the Konung Mamang protest against the conduct of the Sangai Festival yesterday.
According to the statement issued by IDA Manipur, the incident occurred around 1:00 PM when a scuffle broke out between protestors and security forces attempting to disperse the gathering. It was stated that the doctor, who was closing her clinic for safety, was physically mishandled in the melee, resulting in an injury to the ulnar area of her right hand.
Expressing concern over the impact of such incidents on healthcare services, the association stated that doctors and medical workers have continued serving the public despite the tense situation in the state, and that any threat to their safety could demoralise the fraternity and disrupt essential medical support.
In its statement, IDA Manipur urged the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, Imphal East, to ensure that similar incidents are prevented in the future. It was further demanded that security protocols be put in place for healthcare workers operating in sensitive zones, and that clear directives be issued to security personnel to safeguard civilians, particularly members of the medical community, during public unrest.
