Deputy Speaker Files Rs. 100 Crore Defamation Suit Against YouTuber

March 13, 2025: Meghalaya Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira has filed a Rs. 100 crore defamation suit against two individuals for allegedly misrepresenting his stance on the demand for making Tura the winter capital.

The cases were lodged against Mikkanchi R Sangma from Darangiri, Goalpara District, Assam, and Balsrang Marak from Thapa Darenchi, North Garo Hills, in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Shillong.

Speaking to the media, Shira stated that the individuals had circulated misleading content on YouTube, falsely claiming that he was completely against his own community and opposed the proposal for Tura’s designation as a winter capital. He clarified that his statements in the Assembly were taken out of context and misrepresented to the public.

Condemning the spread of misinformation, Shira asserted that such baseless allegations had tarnished his reputation, prompting him to take legal action.

He urged for responsible discourse on social media and emphasized the need for accuracy in public discussions regarding legislative matters.
