EARTH DAY “CYCLOTHON” SPREADS MESSAGE OF SUSTAINABILITY IN IMPHAL

“Protecting our environment is not just a duty, it is our legacy for the generations to come,” said Principal Secretary Arun Kumar Sinha, as Imphal City came alive with the spirit of Earth Day through a 12-kilometer Cyclothon organized by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur.

Flagged off from the western gate of Kangla, the event drew nearly 300 enthusiastic participants, including officials, environmentalists, media personnel, and concerned citizens. The Cyclothon echoed this year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” promoting awareness on climate change and sustainable living.

Addressing the gathering, Principal Secretary Sinha underlined the need for collective action in conserving the environment. He advocated for afforestation, spring water conservation, eco-tourism, and the development of eco-friendly villages, stressing that these steps are vital to ensure a greener future for both the valley and the hills.

Director Dr. T. Brajakumar Singh of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change emphasized the importance of sustainable lifestyles and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Highlighting the role of bicycles and electric vehicles, he said these alternatives could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help combat climate change.

The event concluded with a strong message of unity and responsibility, as Imphal joined the global community in reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the Earth.
