Education and Legal Literacy Key to Women’s Empowerment: MSCW

Emphasising education and legal awareness as critical tools for social change, the Manipur State Commission for Women organised a one-day capacity-building programme on Empowerment Through Education and Legal Literacy at the DM Community College Hall, DM College of Science, Imphal, on January 13.

Addressing the programme, MSCW Member Secretary and Additional Director (IPR), W Phajatombi Devi, underlined the Commission’s women-focused mandate and encouraged students and teachers to actively engage with the technical sessions. She also highlighted the role of the Central Industrial Security Force in securing vital national infrastructure such as airports, railways and metro systems, stating that greater public understanding of its contribution is needed.

Phajatombi Devi further said the Commission is placing special emphasis on free marital counselling this year. She referred to the National Commission for Women’s initiative Tere Mere Sapne, under which Pre-Marital Communication Centres are being set up in youth-oriented institutions to help young people prepare emotionally and socially for marriage.

MSCW Chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang said legal awareness remains limited among large sections of society, making such programmes essential. She described MSCW, established in 2006, as a key platform for addressing women’s issues and protecting their rights. Quoting the importance of attentive learning, she urged students to absorb the knowledge shared during the sessions for practical use in their lives.

The programme included technical presentations on Capacity Building for Youth Aspiring to Join the Central Paramilitary Force by Mohnish Bagree, Deputy Commandant and CASO of CISF Unit, Imphal Airport, and Legal Literacy: A Tool for Women’s Empowerment by Aribam Nouteneshwari Devi.

The event was attended by Prof N Subhashchandra Singh, Nodal Officer of DM Community College, MSCW member SK Sophia Moyon, along with students and faculty members of the college.
