EMA Trust Deposits Commemorative Painting of Historical Significance at Cellular Jail

Port Blair/Sri Vijay Puram, Andaman & Nicobar Islands | 12 January 2026

In continuation of its recent commemorative initiative at Mount Manipur (formerly Mount Harriet), the Egalitarian Manipur of the Altruists (EMA) Trust, Manipur, has deposited a commemorative painting of historical significance at the historic Cellular Jail in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

This initiative highlights the deep and enduring historical bond between Manipur and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, rooted in India’s freedom struggle. Following the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, 23 freedom fighters from Manipur were among the earliest revolutionaries exiled by the British to the Andamans, with many later imprisoned at the Cellular Jail, a powerful symbol of colonial repression and national resistance.

The commemorative painting artistically depicts the historical, emotional, and cultural connection between Manipur and the Andamans. It is intended to serve as an educational and inspirational medium, particularly for the younger generation, by highlighting a lesser-known chapter of India’s national freedom movement.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Premkumar, a representative of EMA Trust, stated:
“The Cellular Jail is not merely a monument; it is a living testament to the indomitable spirit of India’s freedom fighters. Through this commemorative painting, EMA Trust pays homage to their sacrifices and reaffirms its commitment to preserving India’s historical and cultural heritage.”

The initiative is non-commercial and aims to promote historical awareness, national integration, and cultural remembrance. EMA Trust expressed its sincere gratitude to the Andaman & Nicobar Administration and the Cellular Jail authorities for their cooperation and support in preserving this shared heritage.

As part of its broader mission, EMA Trust remains committed to undertaking such initiatives so that Manipur’s vital role in India’s freedom struggle receives its rightful recognition and is passed on to future generations. For far too long, the contributions and sacrifices of Manipur’s freedom fighters have remained outside the mainstream historical narrative and textbooks. Through such commemorative efforts, EMA Trust seeks to bring this rich and proud history into the national consciousness, inspire the youth, and affirm that the people of Manipur played a significant and honourable role in India’s journey to freedom.
