20 March, 2025 : “Every human being is not perfect, but each differently-abled person has a unique strength that stands out,” said W. Phajatombi Devi, Member Secretary of the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), at a special consultation on the conditions of women and girls with disabilities.
Organized under MSCW’s sponsorship, the event was jointly hosted by the All Tribal Disabilities Union, Wheelchair Basketball Association, and Deaf Welfare Organisation, Manipur, at the Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul. It marked the first time International Women’s Day was celebrated in Manipur with a dedicated focus on women with disabilities.
MSCW Chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang urged women with disabilities to step out of societal constraints and seek opportunities. Discussions revolved around the difficulties faced by differently-abled individuals, including inaccessible police stations and hospitals, lack of higher education facilities, and the need for interpreters in government departments.
Participants appealed to the government to create a more inclusive environment, ensuring disabled-friendly infrastructure and policies. The consultation was attended by MSCW members Lourembam Dayabati Devi, T. Chuongsin Koireng, and Sk. Sophia Moyon, along with around 50 women with disabilities.
