CHANDEL, July 17, 2026: The National Programme for Control of Blindness, District Health Society Chandel, observed Eye Donation Fortnight at District Hospital Chandel on Friday with the theme “Let Your Eyes Live On.”
As part of the observance, a one-day free eye check-up camp for cataract screening, along with free presbyopic glasses and medicine distribution, was held.
A total of 117 patients attended the camp. Seventy (70) presbyopic glasses were distributed. During the screening, 13 cataract cases and 3 pterygium cases were detected.
The event was attended by Dr. Joyson Mathew Monsang, CMO Chandel, as Chief Guest; Dr. Serbum Shakchung Moyon, Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Chandel, as Guest of Honour; and Dr. Leishangthem Rita Chanu, DNO, NPCB, as Functional President.
Delivering the keynote address, the DNO, NPCB, spoke on eye donation awareness and stressed that eye donation involves donating a person’s eyes after death with family consent, and that the eyes must be retrieved within six hours, making immediate contact with the eye bank crucial. She stated that anyone above 18 years can pledge to become a donor, regardless of age, sex, blood group, religion, or health and eye conditions.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Joyson Mathew Monsang encouraged the public to donate their eyes, stating that eye donation brings light, hope, and livelihood back not only to a blind person but also to their entire family. Dr. Serbum Shakchung Moyon urged people to embrace this noble practice and “let the eyes live on.”
During the programme, a pledge for eye donation was administered. The fortnight-long observance aims to increase awareness and pledge registrations across Chandel district to reduce corneal blindness.
