March 15, 2026 (TBL): Like Minded Group (LMG) provided assistance to the family of Ningthoujam Purnima, who committed suicide by hanging herself at the Leimaram Relief Camp.
On the evening of March 3, the day the Yaoshang festival began, Ningthoujam Purnima (20 years old), who was staying at the relief camp set up at Leimaram High School, committed suicide by hanging herself from the school’s verandah. Upon hearing the news, the Like Minded Group (LMG), a yeoman humanitarian service group, visited the relief camp and offered financial assistance of Rs. 7,000 to Purnima’s mother, Ningthoujam Subhashini, and shared the family’s grief.
The LMG Manipur stated that this assistance is part of their continuous efforts to help those suffering from hardship in the state.
Among those present during the assistance were the group’s Secretary Ojir Sorokhaibam, Publicity Secretary Rakesh Naorem, Treasurer Kunjeshwar Mangsatabam, Assistant Secretary Surendra Ningomba, Joykumar Thokchom and member Boinao Maibam.
Ningthoujam Purnima, who passed away, was born on May 10, 2006, to Ningthoujam Kondum and Subhashini. She was a Class XI student studying at Oinam Girls’ Higher Secondary School. She was the youngest among six siblings. Her mother, along with one brother and three children, had been staying at the relief camp since May 3, 2023, after fleeing their home in Waroiching and settling at the Leimaram Relief Camp.
Speaking about the day’s assistance, the group’s secretary, Ojir Sorokhaibam, stated, “Upon hearing the news of Ningthoujam Purnima’s death by suicide on the evening of March 3, the day Yaoshang began, due to unbearable hardship and mental anguish while staying at the relief camp, LMG Manipur provided this assistance of Rs. 7,000 to help mitigate the family’s suffering.”
Ojir Sorokhaibam further added, “Since May 3, 2023, a significant number of people have been residing in relief camps after fleeing their homes due to communal unrest in Manipur. It is deeply saddening and distressing that so many people, driven by despair, are resorting to suicide. Doctors had previously warned that such incidents could increase. It is crucial for the relevant departments to conduct mental health awareness programmes regularly in the relief camps to address these issues.”
Ojir Sorokhaibam also mentioned, “Ningthoujam Purnima’s family is in extreme distress. We urge the public to come forward and provide assistance to this family to help them overcome their sorrow. LMG Manipur has been providing assistance to those facing hardship for about five years, with members contributing Rs. 100 each per month. We appeal to the public to support LMG.”
