Fire on Diesel-Laden Freight Train Near Tiruvallur Disrupts Rail Traffic Across Chennai Region

Rail services across Chennai and its surrounding districts were thrown into chaos early Sunday after a massive fire broke out on a diesel-laden freight train near Tiruvallur. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, prompting a large-scale emergency response and triggering widespread disruption in passenger and freight operations.

The fire reportedly started after several wagons of the freight train derailed between Tiruvallur and Egattur. Thick plumes of black smoke filled the sky as flames engulfed over a dozen fuel-carrying wagons, raising concerns among local residents and authorities. The affected train was transporting thousands of litres of diesel, and a significant quantity is believed to have been lost in the fire.

Local fire and rescue services, supported by disaster response teams, were immediately dispatched to the scene. After several hours of intense firefighting, the blaze was brought under control. Authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported, and quick intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby tankers and infrastructure.

The incident caused major delays and cancellations across the Chennai–Arakkonam rail section, one of the busiest routes in southern India. Multiple express and passenger trains, including long-distance services from Chennai Central, were either cancelled, diverted, or short-terminated. Suburban electric train (EMU) services were suspended for hours due to damage to overhead power lines and safety concerns in the affected section.

Railway officials initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire, with preliminary reports suggesting a mechanical fault in one of the wagons may have triggered the derailment. Tracks in the area were significantly damaged, and restoration work is currently underway.

Passengers were advised to check with railway helplines for updated train schedules, while local authorities ensured that residents near the accident site were evacuated as a precaution. Rail officials are assessing the extent of the material loss, which is expected to run into crores of rupees due to the destruction of fuel and rolling stock.

By afternoon, partial services had resumed on unaffected lines, though full restoration is expected to take several more hours. The incident marks one of the most serious freight train accidents in the region in recent years, raising concerns about the safety of hazardous material transport on busy passenger routes.
