With an aim to pass down the importance of traditional art forms of Manipur, the State Education Department organised a 6-day-long workshop-cum-residential coaching on Manipur martial arts, ‘Mukna’ and ‘Thang-Ta,’ for students for the first time at the Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium.
The camp was participated in by 308 students along with 50 teacher-in-charges and technical officials from various parts of the state. Thang-Ta, a traditional martial art form of swords and spears (also known as Huyen Lallong), and Mukna, a traditional form of wrestling of the Meitei people, are not only forms of physical exercise but also have cultural and spiritual significance, reflecting the ethos of the people and the region.
The initiative aims to imbibe the state’s rich culture, tradition, and history among students of traditional forms of martial arts, informed Director of Education N. Bhogendra Meitei, who also said these art forms are deeply rooted in Manipur’s heritage and instrumental in shaping discipline and physical fitness.
The workshop provided students with hands-on training, demonstrations, and expert guidance, aiming to preserve and promote these traditional martial arts for future generations.
