JAN 30, 2025 (IMP): The Federation of Civil Societies (FOCS) Manipur, one of the leading CSOs in the valley areas, has appealed to all the people of Manipur to support and welcome internally displaced persons (IDPs) returning or making efforts to return to their respective native homes. The CSO also informed that it is ready to initiate all indispensable steps to restore peace and normalcy in the state.
According to a statement issued by the Secretary of Information & Public Relations, FOCS, Nerish Mangang said that Manipur, with its unique history of over 1,000 years and its pluralistic population of several ethnic communities living interdependently in unity, is now facing serious challenges. He said it is unfortunate that the strength and unity of the people have become indiscernible in recent years.
He added that it is high time to renew unity and trust to restore peace and normalcy in the changing situation of the state, noting that growing mistrust among communities has further aggravated the situation.
The statement further said that the unfortunate incident that occurred on May 3, 2023, in Manipur has deeply affected the economic condition of the people and forced over 60,000 individuals into relief camps.
Considering all facets of the issues and challenges faced by IDPs from both the Meitei and Kuki communities, FOCS stressed the imperative need for their return to native homes and economic revival. In this regard, it organised a “one-day academic discourse on normalization in Manipur,” attended by various subject experts.
Based on the suggestions and recommendations provided by the experts, FOCS stated that it is prepared to exert pressure on the concerned authorities for the restoration of peace and normalcy and is ready to take all necessary steps to translate these into action.
FOCS also emphasised the need for the state government to formulate a comprehensive and pragmatic policy to enhance the livelihood and economic condition of IDPs who have been severely affected by the conflict.
