Forest Department Conducts Drive Against Bird Trapping

The Kakching Forest Range conducted a drive to stop the trapping of wild birds on Tuesday as part of an ongoing campaign against illegal bird hunting.

The drive was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Leishangthem Jeeceelee, DFO of Thoubal Forest Division. During the drive, the team seized at least 10 bird traps.

According to reports, the team comprising Range Officer Sundar Huidrom, along with Pallel Beat Officer Nameirakpam Bikramjit, Forester H. Sanamatum, and other forest staff, conducted the drive in areas under the Lousi Pat region within the jurisdiction of the Kakching Range.

Range Officer Sundar Huidrom stated that since this is the migratory season, a large number of birds have started arriving, and some individuals are taking advantage of this by setting traps in wetlands and paddy fields. He further appealed to the public to refrain from such illegal activities and cooperate with the department in protecting wildlife.

He added that the department will continue to conduct similar drives in the coming days and that anyone found trapping birds or setting traps will face legal action under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The Forest Department also appealed to the public not to hunt or trap birds, as doing so is a punishable offence.
