FEB 26, 2026 (IMP): The Central Government, Ministry of Home Affairs, has appointed former Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, as Chairperson of the ‘Commission of Inquiry’ on the ‘Incidents of Violence in Manipur’ for the purpose of making an inquiry into a definite matter of public importance, with effect from March 28, 2026.
The appointment comes consequent upon the acceptance of the resignation of Justice Ajai Lamba, former Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, from the post of Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry on Incidents of Manipur Violence.
The terms of reference and other conditions of the Commission, as notified in the principal notification number S.O. 2424(E) dated June 4, 2023, as amended from time to time, shall remain unchanged.
