From “Beyond Silence” to Public Good: DIPR Director Offers to Sponsor Welfare Scheme Journalism Award for Manipur Update

Feb 1, 2026 (IMP): “Beyond Silence”, the 1st Manipur Digital Media Conclave, which also included award distribution for digital journalists and media platforms held in Imphal, has acted as a catalyst for dialogue and discussion. The Director of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Manipur, has also proposed his willingness to sponsor one dedicated journalism award for effective coverage of public welfare schemes from next year.

While addressing the inaugural function held at Sangai Hall of Imphal Hotel, DIPR Director (IAS) A. Subash appreciated the Manipur Update initiative for encouraging responsible digital journalism and said such an award would motivate media persons to highlight developmental and welfare initiatives that often go unnoticed despite their impact on the public.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, the DIPR Director observed that journalism has moved far beyond the traditional printing press, with digital platforms dramatically accelerating the spread of news. However, he cautioned that this speed has also increased the responsibility on journalists to report not only quickly but also truthfully. He expressed displeasure over the growing trend of self-styled digital journalists driven primarily by monetisation and view counts, stressing that journalism must remain rooted in verification and independence.

“Unverified news can damage reputations and erode public trust,” he noted, underlining the long-term consequences of misinformation. Singh further remarked that many positive initiatives undertaken by the government fail to receive adequate attention in the media landscape.

In this context, he suggested that Manipur Update consider instituting a special award category to recognise journalists who produce impactful and credible reports on public welfare schemes, a category he expressed willingness to sponsor.
