DEC 29, 2026 (IMP): From Nido Tania to numerous unreported and underreported cases of racial slurs and assaults on Indian Northeasterners, the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), the oldest student body of Manipur, has expressed deep anguish and vehemently condemned the latest brutal killing of Angel Chakma in Dehradun, demanding the immediate arrest and strict punishment of those involved.
Angel Chakma (24), an MBA student from Tripura, was reportedly beaten and stabbed after racial slurs were hurled at him and his brother by a group of men on December 9 for trying to prove he was Indian. The late Angel Chakma, who died in hospital on Friday, had been battling for over 14 days on ventilator support.
“This heinous act is not only a crime against an individual but a grave assault on the dignity, identity, and safety of students from Northeast India across the country,” said AMSU (HQ) Information Secretary Ngagom Nihen. The student body also demanded a time-bound and transparent investigation to ensure that justice is neither delayed nor denied.
AMSU further called for the recognition of racial abuse and hate crimes against Northeastern communities as serious criminal offences, with stringent enforcement and concrete measures by the Central and State governments to ensure the safety, dignity, and protection of Northeastern students studying outside the region.
“AMSU firmly asserts that racism has no place in a democratic and multicultural nation like India. The continued targeting of Northeastern people based on their appearance and ethnicity is a direct violation of Articles 14, 15, and 21 of the Constitution of India and an affront to the ideals of unity, equality, and fraternity,” the student body said.
The All Manipur Students’ Union also stated that it stands in solidarity with the bereaved family of Angel Chakma and with all Northeastern communities who continue to face racism and violence. AMSU reiterated that silence is not an option and impunity will not be tolerated.
