March 27, 2026 : In a big political shift, former rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah was sworn in as Nepal’s Prime Minister today, marking his rise as one of the youngest leaders to hold the country’s top executive office.
The oath-taking ceremony, held in Kathmandu, followed his party’s sweeping electoral victory, signalling a major transition in Nepal’s political landscape. Known popularly as “Balen,” Shah’s unconventional journey from music to governance has captured widespread public attention, especially among the youth.
Balendra, who first rose to prominence as a rapper before entering politics, has built his image around anti-establishment narratives, urban reform, and grassroots engagement.
In his initial remarks, the new Prime Minister emphasised transparency, development, and inclusive governance, pledging to prioritise youth empowerment and institutional reforms.
Political observers view his appointment as a significant departure from traditional leadership patterns in Nepal, with expectations high for transformative governance under his leadership.
