From USA to Australia, Meitei Diaspora Slams SoO Extension as Reward for Violence

Meitei diaspora groups from India and abroad, under the banner of the Meitei Alliance, have strongly condemned the Government of India’s decision to extend the Suspension of Operations (SoO) with Kuki militant groups KNO and UPF.

The Alliance, which includes organizations across India as well as in Australia, the UK, Europe, Canada, the USA, and Nicaragua, described the move as a reward for violence that undermines peace and democracy in Manipur.

In its statement, the Alliance said, “Far from strengthening democracy, the continuation of SoO emboldens militant groups in their pursuit of a separate country, inspired by a racist, genocidal, Nazi-style ideology.” It warned that the extension “risks accelerating the balkanization of the Northeast and undermining Manipur’s integrity.”

The group alleged that SoO has allowed militant groups to continue killings, extortion, drug trafficking, and arms stockpiling while keeping the state’s lifeline highways under blockade. “Both highways remain under militant control, inflicting economic strangulation and humanitarian hardship, especially on the Meitei community,” the statement said.

It further argued that the monitoring mechanism is fundamentally flawed, since militants themselves are part of the Joint Monitoring Group and still have access to their weapons.

Accusing the Centre of ignoring the Manipur Assembly’s unanimous resolution for abrogation, the Alliance declared, “Peace cannot be built on appeasement. True stability requires dismantling militant structures, restoring authority to the State Government, and upholding the rights and dignity of all communities.”

The diaspora platform urged the immediate withdrawal of the SoO and decisive action against militant groups.
