March 13, 2025: In a continued effort to enhance solid waste management under the ‘Clean City’ initiatives, the Municipal Administration, Housing, and Urban Development (MAHUD) Department has focused on tackling hazardous waste and glassware.
Today, RK Dinesh Singh, Principal Secretary of MAHUD, and Ng. Uttam Singh, Director of MAHUD, handed over one ‘Glass Shredder’ machine each to the Thoubal Municipal Council and Mayang Imphal Municipal Council at a ceremony held at the City Convention Centre.
The event was attended by officials from both municipal councils, the MAHUD Directorate, and the Manipur Urban Development Authority (MUDA).
The newly distributed glass shredders, procured by the MAHUD Directorate, are capable of processing up to 150 kg of glassware per hour. The machines are equipped with a 7.5 kW electric motor and cost around Rs. 9.00 lakhs per unit, which includes installation, transportation, and GST.
Additionally, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) sets were distributed to both municipal councils. Each set includes a helmet, earplugs, an N95 face mask, eyeglasses, and rubber gloves, ensuring the safety of workers handling the equipment.
The glass shredders are designed to crush and grind waste glass into fine, sand-sized particles, transforming it into silica sand. This new material can be used as an alternative to traditional construction sand, offering a sustainable solution while reducing the amount of waste deposited at dumpsites.
The MAHUD Directorate announced that more such machines would be procured in the near future to further strengthen waste management efforts across urban areas in the state.
