March 12, 2025 : Director of Health Services Dr. Chambo Gonmei emphasized the rising concern of glaucoma in Manipur, citing reports of approximately 8 million cases of glaucoma worldwide, with a growing number of cases emerging in the state.
He was speaking during World Glaucoma Week 2025 at a special awareness event at the Classic Grande’s Imperial Hall in Imphal today.
The event, organized by the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment, National Health Mission, and the Directorate of Health Services, themed “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World,” aimed to spread knowledge about glaucoma and its prevention.
Dr. Gonmei highlighted how the condition often develops without symptoms until it’s too late, leading to irreversible blindness. He urged the community to pay attention to early signs and seek timely medical help, particularly those with risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, and a family history of eye diseases.
Dr. Gonmei also noted that while cataract surgeries have been prevalent in the region, glaucoma remains a hidden threat that requires more attention.
“Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness, and we must increase awareness and make eye screenings more accessible to everyone,” he stated.
The event was attended by officials, including State Mission Director of NHM, Dr. M. Dinesh Singh, and Director of Family Welfare, Dr. N. Hemantakumar Singh. The event also included discussions on preventive measures and the importance of timely medical intervention.
