Government Returns ₹12 Lakh to IDPs After Protest Over ‘Meagre’ Allowance

The Imphal East district administration on Monday returned nearly ₹12 lakh to internally displaced persons (IDPs) staying at the Sajiwa relief camp, marking a positive development after the group had earlier rejected the government’s daily allowance.

On November 5, a total of 466 IDPs housed in the prefabricated shelter complex at Sajiwa deposited ₹11,74,320 at the Sub-Divisional Office, calling the government-provided ₹84 per day per person “inadequate” and “insulting.” Displaced since the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, they marched together to return the allowance in protest.

Following renewed discussions, Deputy Commissioner Nivedita Lairenlakpam handed back the amount to the families at the Imphal East DC complex on Monday.

Speaking to media, Nivedita confirmed that 54 families from Imphal East—particularly from Keirao Bitra—have already returned to their homes. Additionally, 31 families from Kakching district currently staying in Imphal East relief camps are prepared to return once their children complete their examinations.
