The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, marked its 54th Foundation Day today with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla as the chief guest. Established in 1972 as the Regional Medical College, the institute has now completed 53 years of service in advancing healthcare and medical education.
As part of the celebration, the Governor distributed awards to more than fifty outstanding students from different medical streams. He also unveiled the annual magazine Remedy and released the latest issue of the RIMS Medical Society journal, along with formally introducing the Society’s newly elected office bearers.
In his address, Governor Bhalla described the occasion as both a celebration and a time for reflection on RIMS’ journey and its significant role in shaping medical education in the Northeast. He lauded the institute for growing into a centre of excellence that now stands at par with leading medical institutions across India.
The Governor highlighted RIMS’ academic contributions, pointing out that the institute admits 125 MBBS students and 166 postgraduates annually across 25 specialties, including super-specialty courses. Over the decades, it has produced more than 4,000 doctors and 2,300 specialists, in addition to numerous healthcare professionals who continue to serve across the nation.
Underscoring the vital role of doctors, Governor Bhalla said their work goes beyond curing illnesses, as they also restore trust and protect human life. He urged RIMS to expand its focus on research and innovation, especially in fields that directly impact the Northeast, while also fostering stronger international collaborations.
The Governor concluded by commending the dedication of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers whose service has elevated RIMS into a hub of medical excellence. The event was also attended by RIMS Director Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma and other dignitaries.
