Manipur commemorated Patriots’ Day on August 13, remembering the martyrs of the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War who laid down their lives defending the sovereignty of their homeland. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the state in paying tribute, joined by MLAs, the Chief Secretary, Security Advisor, Director General of Police, and senior civil and police officials.
The observance began with floral tributes at Heecham Yaicham Pat, Moirangkhom, and Thangal Temple, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at Kangla Uttra. At Shaheed Minar, the Governor and dignitaries honoured the martyrs with floral offerings, accompanied by a Guard of Honour and a gun salute from the Manipur Rifles. Tribute was also paid at the Memorial Stone for exiled martyrs of the 1891 war.
In his address, the Governor highlighted the bravery of Yuvaraj Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, Paona Brajabashi, and countless unnamed warriors, stressing that their courage and moral strength continue to inspire generations. He urged citizens to uphold unity, integrity, and the ideals for which the heroes fought, noting that unity is Manipur’s greatest shield and youth its most powerful agent for change.
The Chief Secretary emphasised that the Anglo-Manipur War remains a reminder of the state’s resilience and the importance of unity for progress. He called on young people to contribute to building a peaceful and prosperous Manipur.
As part of the programme, the Governor also led a pledge against drug abuse under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. The event saw participation from government officials, security personnel, students, and members of the public.
