IMPHAL, August 7: Calling for a stronger and more modern handloom ecosystem, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has urged Manipur to strengthen its entire handloom value chain through better infrastructure, quality certification, branding, digital commerce and improved market access.
Bhalla made the remarks while addressing the state-level celebration of National Handloom Day 2026 in Imphal, organised by the Department of Textiles, Commerce & Industry, Government of Manipur. Held under the theme “Threads of Tradition: Weaving Culture Through Handloom,” the programme celebrated the State’s weaving heritage and recognised the contribution of its weavers and artisans.
The Governor said National Handloom Day should serve not only as an occasion to recognise the dedication of weavers but also as a reminder of the collective responsibility to preserve and advance the sector for future generations. He noted that handloom represents an important part of Manipur’s cultural identity while also offering considerable opportunities for economic growth, employment and sustainable livelihoods.
He particularly emphasised the need to increase awareness of GI-tagged handloom products of Manipur, saying greater recognition of their authenticity could help enhance their value and expand their presence in domestic and international markets. He also highlighted the importance of the sector in promoting women-led development and preserving the State’s cultural heritage.
The programme featured an exhibition of a variety of handloom products from Manipur. The Governor, along with other dignitaries, released a Data Book on Handloom and the coffee table book “Threads of Heritage: Traditional & GI-Tagged Handwoven Stoles of Manipur.”
State Handloom Awards were conferred on outstanding handloom weavers and handicraft artisans for 2025–26, along with financial assistance under the relevant government scheme. Winners of the Best Cluster Designer Award for Home Furnishing at the National Handloom Designers’ Conclave 2026 were also felicitated.
Bhalla also congratulated Takhellambam Rani Devi of Kakching district, who received the National Handloom Award 2026 in the Women’s Weaving category for her work, “Shaphee Lanphee in Silk Innaphi.” He described the recognition of the State’s weavers as a proud moment for Manipur and acknowledged their skill, dedication and resilience.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Additional Chief Secretary (Textiles, Commerce & Industry) Anurag Bajpai, a Padma Shri recipient, National Handloom Awardees, MLAs, senior civil and police officials, weavers, artisans, cooperative representatives and other stakeholders attended the programme.
