Governor Reviews Forensic Capabilities in Manipur; Calls for Expediting Pending Cases

Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Monday chaired a comprehensive review meeting on the functioning of the Directorate of Forensic Sciences and State Forensic Laboratory, with a focus on enhancing forensic infrastructure and capacity in the state.

During the meeting, the Home Commissioner presented proposals for establishing a mobile forensic unit and van, setting up new facilities for explosive residue examination, and developing a dedicated DNA analysis wing — initiatives aimed at modernizing forensic investigations. The Governor was also briefed on manpower shortages and pending case backlogs, directing officials to expedite examinations and clearances.

Representatives from the National Forensic Sciences University’s Manipur campus at Pangei highlighted challenges due to limited equipment and infrastructure, while noting that diploma and postgraduate diploma courses are already being conducted in key forensic disciplines.

Later in the day, Bhalla also presided over the ‘Governor-in-Council’ meeting at Raj Bhavan, which reviewed agendas from various departments in the presence of the Chief Secretary and senior administrative officials. The deliberations stressed improved coordination and effective service delivery across sectors.
