Govt Vacate Order Frazzles IDPs Sheltering in Langol Game Village

Nearly 200 IDPs, currently sheltering at government quarters in Langol Game Village (Zones 1, 2, 3, and 4) in Imphal West, have now faced uncertainty after the district administration ordered them to vacate the premises.

The IDPs, frazzled with this issue, claim that they have no alternative shelter as of now, highlighting the issue to the media in Imphal on Sunday. They stated that their appeals to the government for permanent rehabilitation and security assurances for their safe return have yet to be translated into action.

The families, who have been sheltering in the said place for the past two years after fleeing their homes since the violence broke out in May 2023, informed that they have already sought a meeting with the DC of Imphal West; however, they have yet to avail themselves of the meeting.

The IDPs also informed that they have submitted a formal petition to both the Deputy Commissioner and the Director General of Police (DGP), Manipur, urging the government to withdraw or suspend the eviction order. Though the offices of the DC and DGP have acknowledged receipt of the appeals, no official response or assurance has yet been given or issued.

According to their memorandum dated October 31, IDPs from Churachandpur, Moreh, Kwatha, Kangpokpi, Sugnu, and other conflict-hit areas have been taking temporary refuge at the Langol quarters since May 3, 2023.

While the government has initiated limited rehabilitation measures, many families continue to demand adequate security, compensation, and safe passage back to their homes.
