A public gathering in Churachandpur, organized by the Indigenous Tribal Liberation Front (ITLF), took a controversial turn as a viral video captured members of the group in combat attire, carrying firearms, and performing gun salute actions amidst the presence of security personnel, that starkly violate the conditions of the government-issued permit for the event.
The permit, aimed at ensuring a peaceful assembly, clearly prohibited weapons and combat uniforms, raising serious questions about adherence to security protocols and the potential for further escalation in an already tense environment.
On May 2, 2025, the District Magistrate of Churachandpur granted permission to the ITLF to organize a public gathering at the Wall of Remembrance, Tuibong, with strict conditions designed to maintain law and order. These included a ban on loudspeakers outside the meeting area, no rallies, and a firm prohibition on weapons and combat attire.
Despite these stipulations, a disturbing video circulating on social media shows ITLF members in camouflage uniforms, brandishing firearms, and even performing a gun salute during the event. This blatant violation of the terms outlined in the permit has sparked public outcry and raised concerns about the potential for further unrest in the region.
With the viral video continuing to fuel debate, the ITLF’s violation of the permit conditions has highlighted the challenges of maintaining order in the Kuki-Zo dominated areas while mass combing operations are being carried out in the valley region dominated by the Meitei community.
