Heavy Rain Triggers Flash Floods in Salungpham; Iron Bridge Collapses at Yairipok Malom

Thoubal, Sept 14 — Due to continuous heavy rainfall since last night, landslides occurred on the hill slopes near Kairembikhok area under Thoubal district, causing overflow from the Nongdambi River in Salungpham village, Thoubal district. The river embankment was breached, and large volumes of floodwater inundated several areas of the village. As a result, all Salungpham areas, which fall under Heirok AC, have been severely flooded.

The sudden flooding in Salungpham submerged several houses, including furniture houses. Household goods and paddy fields were damaged extensively by the rising waters. Responding to the situation, Thoubal Deputy Commissioner Hannah Kahmei inspected the flood-hit areas along with officials from the Water Resources Department to assess the damages. Volunteers of IRCS Thoubal district also arrived at Salungpham to help residents and provide support.

Meanwhile, in Yairipok Malom, an iron bridge over the Thoubal River leading towards Imphal East’s Changamdabi collapsed due to the swollen current of the river. With river water rising, locals expressed fear of further flooding in the surrounding areas. However, the water level of the Thoubal River remained below the warning level at 2 pm on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in Khangabok AC, overflow of the Wangjing River caused flooding at Sangaiyumpham Part-I area, submerging around 200 houses. The embankment near Nungphou Mathak Dam and at the Puleipokpi section of Nungphou also faced severe breaches, worsening the flooding and leaving villagers in distress. For immediate relief works, local MLA O. Surjakumar arranged a JCB and other necessary items to assist in the repair of the overflowed area.

At Wangjing village, floodwaters entered Wangjing SK Leikai and Wangjing Wangkhei, submerging several houses due to the overflow of the Wangjing River. Wangjing High School and Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex were also inundated, causing hardship for families staying at the relief camp set up inside the complex.
