Let’s not do such strong things. Instead, appeal not to spread rumours

April 15, 2026 (IMP): Amid rising tension in Bishnupur district, Govindas Konthoujam has called on the public to avoid spreading misinformation and maintain calm.

The situation escalated following an incident linked to a security operation that began with the apprehension of a suspected drug peddler at Tulihal Airport in Imphal. During questioning, the individual reportedly disclosed information about the presence of drugs and weapons in the Kwakta area of Bishnupur district.

Acting on the input, a joint team comprising personnel from central and state forces moved towards the location. However, en route, a misunderstanding arose when local women stopped and checked vehicles, leading to confusion about the identity of those inside. The situation quickly deteriorated, resulting in violence, injuries, and the burning of a vehicle.

Security forces, including Assam Rifles and state commandos, responded promptly and carried out rescue operations. Additional deployments have been made, and combing operations are in progress to prevent further escalation.

Authorities have initiated steps to identify those responsible for the violence, while discussions at the government level are being planned to address the situation. The Home Minister emphasized the need for restraint and urged citizens not to circulate unverified information that could worsen tensions.

The conference was chaired by Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam and was also attended by Nambol MLA Thounaojam Basanta Kumar, Thanga MLA Tongbram Robindro, and Oinam MLA Irengbam Nalini Devi.
