House Approved PR Extension for Another 6 Months for Manipur

The resolution moved by MoS Home Affairs Nityanand Rai to extend President’s Rule in Manipur has been approved by the Parliamentary Committee for a further extension of six months, with effect from 13th August 2025. Manipur had earlier imposed the President’s Rule on 13th February this year.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai moved the resolution seeking the House’s approval for the extension of President’s Rule, which was imposed in Manipur on 13th February 2025.

Replying to a discussion on the resolution, Mr. Nityanand Rai said that it is imperative to extend the President’s Rule to maintain peace and normalcy in the state. He mentioned that only one incident of violence occurred, in which one person lost his life since the imposition of President’s Rule. He added that not a single person has lost their life in the last four months in the state.

The Minister said several steps have been taken for the development of the Northeastern state under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He added that the Prime Minister visited the Northeastern states more than 78 times in the last decade. He stated that significant reductions in incidents of violence have been reported under the NDA regime compared to the UPA rule. The Minister highlighted that efforts are being made to bring peace and normalcy to Manipur by establishing a dialogue process.

Earlier, initiating the discussion, Anto Antony of Congress raised the issue of the law and order situation in the state, alleging a complete collapse of governance. Lalji Verma of the Samajwadi Party accused the Centre of failing to restore normalcy in the state after imposing President’s Rule. Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam of Congress accused the federal system of being subverted in the state. He said Article 356 is supposed to be used in the rarest of rare situations. Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu of TDP supported the extension of President’s Rule in Manipur.

After completing the business, the Lower House was adjourned for the day.
