Human Rights Orders Action After Transgender Woman Alleges Family Assault

The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed the Superintendent of Police, Imphal West, to take immediate action on a complaint by Usham Deepika Chanu, a transgender woman who alleged she was assaulted by family members and later faced police inaction.

Deepika, legally recognised as female under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, filed a written complaint at Imphal Police Station on November 12, but no FIR was registered. A second representation to the SP on November 19 also received no response.

Hearing the matter on November 28, MHRC Acting Chairperson K. Khagendra Singh instructed the SP to issue directions to the Officer-in-Charge and submit a compliance report by December 22.
