IDP Living in Sajiwa Relief Camp Found Hung to Death Near the Camp

In a tragic incident, a 37-year-old male IDP currently living at Sajiwa Relief Camp was found dead, hung on a tree late Sunday near the camp after being reported missing by family members for nearly 2–3 hours.

The deceased, a resident of Sadu Yengkhuman in Imphal East district, has been identified as Konsam Bomet, a daily wage laborer by profession. He is survived by his wife, a differently-abled daughter, and a 10-year-old son.

Earlier, on January 7, a 20-year-old female IDP living in Mekola Relief Camp in Imphal West reportedly died by suicide.

According to a fellow IDP, Sapam Bobocha Singh, the deceased was a hardworking man but had been under financial stress as his situation worsened after the ethnic conflict in the state.

“Before the violence, their children did not require school vans or private tuition. But here in the camp, expenses have multiplied. The government provides only ₹80 per day, which is extremely difficult to manage,” Singh said.

Bomet’s family had been taking shelter at the relief camp since the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur on May 3, 2023. Since the violence erupted, several IDPs have reportedly died by suicide in different camps, reflecting the severe mental, financial, and emotional challenges faced by displaced families.

The incident has once again highlighted the precarious conditions in relief camps across the state, where thousands continue to struggle with livelihood, education, and the trauma of prolonged displacement.
