Around 100 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from a relief camp near Sajiwa, Imphal East, attempted to return to their native village of Dolaithabi on Wednesday but were blocked by security forces near Pukhao Terapur.
The villagers, displaced since the ethnic violence of May 3, 2023, began their march early in the morning, expressing frustration over their prolonged stay in relief camps. Authorities, citing security risks in the sensitive fringe area, stopped the group to avoid any possible escalation.
Despite the blockade, several IDPs managed to cross a nearby river in a determined effort to reach Dolaithabi. However, they were eventually turned back by security personnel deployed near Dolaithabi Dam.
Security measures in the area have been heightened, including the deployment of a company of Mahila CRPF. Senior police officials and district administrators are in talks with local leaders to find a peaceful solution to the issue.
The displaced residents voiced their growing despair, citing lack of livelihood and education for their children. “We can’t survive in the relief camp. We are suffering every day with no income and no future for our children,” said one of the residents, with tears in his eyes.
Though the return attempt was unsuccessful, the situation remains peaceful. Authorities continue to closely monitor developments to maintain order and stability in the region.
