IDPs in Imphal Burn PUCL Report, Call for Its Withdrawal

Anger erupted at the Singjamei Akampat Relief Camp on Sunday as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) staged a demonstration against a recent publication by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL). Protesters burned copies of the report, accusing the rights body of spreading misleading claims that worsened their plight.

Camp residents alleged that the document not only distorted the ground realities but also painted them in a negative light, aggravating communal tensions rather than contributing to peace in conflict-hit Manipur. “Instead of highlighting the suffering of displaced families, PUCL has circulated a biased narrative,” one protester said.

The IDPs stressed that they were the victims — their houses reduced to ashes and families forced to flee for safety. They criticized the report for portraying the Kuki community solely as victims while casting the Meitei community as perpetrators.

The displaced families demanded that PUCL retract its report immediately and refrain from publishing material that could further divide communities already torn apart by the ongoing conflict.
