Imphal is witnessing extensive preparations as India’s President Droupadi Murmu will visit Manipur from tomorrow, 11th December, for a two-day programme. Key routes across the capital are being revamped, with security arrangements significantly tightened ahead of her arrival.
The 7-km stretch from Imphal Airport to the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex is being freshly painted and lined with colourful flags. A 20-foot banner welcoming the President has been installed near Keisampat Junction, marking the final touches to the city’s preparations.
During her visit, President Murmu is scheduled to attend an official function in Imphal on December 11. She will also visit the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex on December 12 to honour the women freedom fighters of the historic Nupi Lal movements of 1904 and 1939, commemorated annually by the state. In addition, the President will attend and watch the ongoing 2nd DGAR Polo Tournament at the historic Manipur Polo Ground, one of the oldest polo grounds in the world.
She is also likely to travel to the hill district of Senapati for a programme on December 12 and interact with internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the City Convention Centre in Imphal.
Meanwhile, the proscribed conglomerate CoRCOM has announced a “total shutdown” opposing the visit, prompting further strengthening of security across the city.
Preparations continue as Manipur readies to welcome the President.
