Imphal: In a landmark initiative aimed at promoting tattoo artistry and providing global exposure to local talent, Manipur’s first-ever tattoo convention, titled “Ink and Echoes,” was inaugurated today at RYO Club, Moirangkhom Bokul Makhong.
The two-day convention has drawn participation from 32 tattoo artists representing 25 studios from Manipur, along with artists from West Bengal and Assam, turning the venue into a dynamic hub of creativity and cultural exchange.
Organiser and RYO Club Secretary Tony Hawaibam stated that the primary objective of the convention is to uplift local tattoo artists by providing them with a platform to showcase their skills and connect with the wider artistic community. He noted that despite possessing remarkable talent, many artists in the state have had limited opportunities to gain exposure beyond Manipur.
Highlighting the broader vision of the event, he said the convention seeks to prepare and propel Manipuri tattoo artists to compete at the international level. As part of this initiative, selected top performers from the event will be given the opportunity to participate in the upcoming tattoo convention in Kalimpong, thereby extending their reach beyond the region.
Tony further observed a significant shift in public perception toward tattooing, stating that the art form is now increasingly recognised as a legitimate medium of creative expression and a viable professional career. He expressed hope that such platforms would inspire more young artists to pursue tattooing professionally.
He also announced that this inaugural edition is only the beginning, with plans to expand “Ink and Echoes” into a larger event in the coming years, further strengthening Manipur’s presence in the global tattoo community.
