Imphal erupted in emotion on Friday as social activist and transgender rights advocate Malem Thongam reached the state capital, concluding a remarkable 77-day bicycle campaign for peace that began in Delhi on October 2, 2025. Her arrival marked the end of a journey aimed at promoting reconciliation in Manipur, a state grappling with prolonged ethnic unrest.
Under heavy security, Thongam cycled into the city as large crowds gathered along the roads to receive her. Supporters applauded, offered garlands, and folded their hands in respect, turning the streets into a powerful display of solidarity and hope.
The peace ride, inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, carried Thongam across multiple states, where she engaged with communities, listened to personal accounts of loss, and appealed for unity. Her mission gained significance against the backdrop of violence that has shaken Manipur since May 3, 2023, claiming nearly 300 lives and forcing thousands from their homes following clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
As she approached the final phase of her journey, Thongam reached Senapati district earlier in the week. However, following reported threats in Kangpokpi district, security personnel escorted her to Sekmai Police Station to ensure her safety.
Resuming her ride on Friday morning alongside five women cyclists, Thongam completed the final stretch to Imphal. A large gathering welcomed her near Kangla Fort, where scenes of tears, embraces, and prayers underscored the emotional weight of the moment.
More than a personal achievement, Thongam’s return was widely seen as a symbolic appeal for peace, demonstrating how individual resolve can inspire collective healing in a state yearning for normalcy.
