Indefinite General Strike Announced at NH-102 Imphal–Moreh Road Section

March 10, 2026 (TBL): The supply of potable drinking water at the Lilong market area and its surroundings has been totally cut off after the pipelines were removed during road expansion in 2021. Enraged locals, through the JAC expressing their woes due to the dearth of water, have announced an indefinite general strike from 5 pm on March 11 from Lilong Bazar to Lilong Ushoipokpi along the National Highway 102.

The Convenor of the JAC Against Non-Supply of Drinking Water (Lilong Bazar to Lilong Ushoipokpi), Aziz Lamin Nongjai, in a press meet at Lilong Heinoumakhong today said the fallout is due to the irresponsible action of the Manipur Government, PHED, and NHIDCL, as the pipes were left unfixed and unrepaired until today after they were removed for road expansion in 2021, and the non-supply of drinking water to the public has caused survival challenges.

On March 3, the JAC had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of the state, Yumnam Khemchand, urging him to ensure the supply of drinking water to the public immediately. The memorandum was also sent to PHED, NHIDCL, and the DC Thoubal. However, due to the lack of any positive response until today, a general strike has been called out of desperation.

The general public from Lilong market to Ushoipokpi are urged to support this cause. It has been informed that the general strike will not affect fire services, water supply, examinations, and other religious observances.

It is to be noted that the JAC Against the Non-Supply of Drinking Water was formed through the collective efforts of nine clubs, including Social Development Association, Lilong Uku; Social Development Organisation, Lilong Turek Ahanbi Mathak Leikai; Lilong Bazar Development Club, Lilong Bazar; Lilong Ipham Leikai Development Club; Resident Welfare Association, Lilong; Lilong United Club, Lilong; United Youth Development Association, Lilong Uku Mamang; Mohammadan Sporting Association, Lilong Heinou Makhong; and ESM Members Welfare Association, Lilong.
