US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that India would take the “right action” on the deportation of illegal immigrants. His statement followed talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a day earlier.
“Discussed immigration with Modi. India will do what is right when it comes to taking back illegal immigrants,” Reuters quoted Trump as saying. The US president also revealed that PM Modi is expected to visit the United States “sometime in February,” although India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not yet confirmed this.
Prime Minister Modi later shared his thoughts on the conversation via X, saying, “Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security.”
The leaders discussed ways to deepen cooperation between the two nations, including addressing key regional issues such as security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe.
President Trump emphasised the need for India to increase its purchase of American-made defence equipment and to move towards a more balanced trade relationship.
