Feb 28, 2025 : The Manipur Pradesh Congress has now raised the question of whether the imposition of President’s Rule in the state is to restore peace and normalcy, to create a state within a state, or if there is any hidden agenda.
Addressing the media at Congress Bhawan in Imphal on Friday, MPCC Vice President and Chief Spokesperson Hareshwar Goswami said that many assurances have been given about maintaining territorial integrity. However, if a state is created within a state, similar to the Bodoland Territorial Council, it would be a complete discredit to Manipur’s 2000-year-old history.
The imposition of PR in the state is unprecedented and the first instance in the country where both the Center and the State are ruled by the same party. Hareshwar stated that the imposition of PR was not indispensable but was necessitated due to the incompetence of the state government, which has failed to maintain law and order, protect public lives and property, and has also suffered from internal disunity.
He further stated that, like the people, the Congress also supports a democratically elected government led by a consensual leader. However, the people are now confused about the hidden agenda behind the President’s Rule.
Without naming individuals, the MPCC also criticized those from CSO backgrounds who have been acting in alignment with certain BJP leaders, disguising their support under the shadow of the party.
