Gaza, Palestine, 25th August (AGENCIES) – At least 15 people, including four Palestinian journalists, were killed on Monday in Israeli airstrikes targeting Gaza’s Nasser Hospital, in what observers say is part of an ongoing campaign to silence independent reporting from the besieged enclave.
The latest attack comes amid mounting criticism of Israel’s conduct in Gaza, where the war has become the deadliest conflict in modern history for media personnel, according to a recent report by the Watson Institute.
Among those killed was Hussam al-Masri, a cameraman working with Reuters, who died in the first strike. Hatem Khaled, a Reuters photographer, was seriously wounded in a subsequent strike on the same location.
“We are devastated to learn of the death of Reuters contractor Hussam al-Masri and injuries to another of our contractors, Hatem Khaled, in Israeli strikes on the Nasser Hospital in Gaza today,” a Reuters spokesperson said. “We are urgently seeking more information and have asked authorities in Gaza and Israel to help us get urgent medical assistance for Hatem.”
Palestinian health officials also confirmed the deaths of Mariam Abu Daqa, Mohammed Salama, and Moath Abu Taha — all journalists working with various international outlets — along with a rescue worker, in the same attack.
Media watchdogs and rights organizations have condemned the incident, warning that repeated targeting of journalists and medical facilities further erodes protections guaranteed under international humanitarian law.
