IWDPA & Veterinary Dept Join Hands to Revive Manipur Pony Heritage through Training on Breeding and Rearing Horses

In a bid to conserve and enhance the indigenous Pony breed of Manipur, the Imphal West District Polo Association (IWDPA), in collaboration with the Directorate of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Services, organized a one-day training programme on “Breeding and Rearing Horses” today at the KRYPSA Campus, Lamphel.

The training witnessed active participation from over 30 pony owners from Imphal West district.

Experts from the Veterinary Department, including Dr. Milan Monohormayum, Deputy Director, State Veterinary Hospital, Imphal; Dr. Laishram Kipjen from the VFA Training Centre, Khumbong; and Dr. Laishram Arjun, Veterinary Officer, DVO Bishnupur, conducted detailed sessions on feeding management, common diseases and their prevention, and inbreeding control.

Representatives from the IWDPA, Chongtham Ajit and Salam Joyshangkar, also interacted with the participants. Ajit emphasized that the Manipuri Pony—once central to the state’s sporting and cultural identity—has now become rare and endangered.

The training, supported by the Directorate of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Services, marks a significant step towards the scientific rearing and sustainable preservation of the iconic Manipuri Pony, blending traditional wisdom with modern veterinary practices.
