An official ceremony was held today at Nungshigum to inaugurate a Japanese Memorial at the historic ridge associated with the fierce fighting during the 1944 Battle of Imphal in the Second World War.
The memorial project was initiated by the 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation in collaboration with the Japanese Expatriate Volunteers in India and the Keibi Khullen Village Development Committee.
Nungshigum Ridge is historically recognised as one of the strategically significant battlegrounds of 1944, where intense combat reportedly took place between Japanese and Allied forces during the Battle of Imphal.
The memorial has been established to honour the soldiers who lost their lives and to remember the suffering endured by countless individuals during the conflict.
Organisers stated that beyond commemorating wartime sacrifice, the memorial stands as a symbol of reconciliation and shared humanity.
They expressed that the initiative reflects a collective commitment to peace, mutual respect, and strengthened ties between nations, with the hope that the lessons of history would guide future generations towards harmony.
The ceremony was attended by Tadashi Asazuma, Vice President of Toyota Kirloskar Motor; Arambam Angamba Singh, President of the 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation; Japanese representatives; community leaders of Keibi Khullen; and members of the public.
The occasion featured floral tributes, commemorative addresses, and a moment of silence in honour of those who perished during the war.
