Joining the nationwide initiative to eradicate child marriage, Deputy Commissioner of Kamjong District, Rangnamei Rang Peter, IAS, launched the ‘Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat’ (Child Marriage Free India) campaign today at his office chamber. The campaign was jointly organised by the District Administration, Kamjong, and the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU).
Speaking at the launch event, DC Rang Peter said the campaign is an initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development aimed at eliminating child marriage and ensuring education, health, and safety for girls. He added that it draws inspiration from the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Abhiyan and aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
He stressed the need for greater public awareness about the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and urged officials and staff of line departments to work collectively and with dedication until the campaign reaches every household in every village of the district.
District Child Protection Officer, Kamjong, M. Robinson, briefed the gathering on the legal framework of the campaign. He reiterated that marriages involving girls under 18 and boys under 21 are strictly prohibited under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and carry serious penalties. He also appealed to the public to report any instances of child marriage by calling Child Helpline 1098.
As part of the campaign launch, a pledge to protect children from child marriage was taken.
The event was attended by the District Child Marriage Prohibition Officer and ADM/SDO Kamjong, H.L. Jain, MCS, along with Block Child Marriage Protection Officers and SDOs of Kasom Khullen, Phungyar, and Sahamphung—A. Rohinikumar, MCS, Nimmi Azingwungshi Khamrang, MCS, and Subinson Sapam, MCS, respectively. Officials and staff from DCPU, various line departments, and the District Administration also participated in the function.
