In a high-stakes counter-insurgency raid, Meghalaya Police arrested Khundongbam Herojit Meitei, the alleged Finance Secretary of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group), a Manipur-based militant outfit.
The operation was carried out at a rented house in Nongthymmai, Byrnihat, on the Assam-Meghalaya border, following intelligence inputs about his involvement in extortion and other subversive activities across Meghalaya and neighbouring states.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Ri-Bhoi District Police swooped in and apprehended Meitei, seizing two mobile phones and several incriminating materials. Preliminary interrogation revealed that he was actively collecting funds on behalf of the banned outfit while evading arrest amid heightened security action against militant groups in Manipur.
Authorities suspect the accused’s links extend beyond state borders, with possible criminal conspiracies involving militant networks in Myanmar and Nepal. His criminal past includes arrests in Manipur for illegal firearm possession in 2023 and a drug trafficking case in Dimapur in 2018.
A case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station and further investigation is on.
