Key CNF leader, along with 4 others seized in Mizoram with AKs and Ammunitions

In one of the largest arms and ammunition seizure in Mizoram, the Mizoram Police in Collab with a sister Intelligence Agency, has made a huge seizure of arms and ammunition along with arrest of 5 individual, including key leader of the Chin National Front (CNF), an insurgent group based in Myanmar. However, the identity of the Chin National Front (CNF) leader has not been revealed along with 4 others arrested.

According to inputs received, the Prelim-investigation reveals that the confiscated arms and ammunition were intended for trade between the Chin National Front (CNF) from Myanmar, a prominent rebel organization and the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF- P), another insurgent group active in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.

The joint-operation was carried out in the outskirts of Saithah village, within the jurisdiction of West Phaileng Police Station, Mamit District of Mizoram and this operation highlights the trans-national character of illegal arms dealings and emphasizes the ongoing threats to regional stability, according to a statement. The seized includes, 6 AK-47 series) rifles, 10,050 of AK ammunition and 13 Magazine cartridges.

Mizoram in recent past, has become a new transnational-transits route for contraband drugs, arms, ammunition and explosive items in the region. In September 16 2024, two Myanmar Nationals were arrested with methamphetamine and heroin worth over Rs. 6 crores in Aizawl by CID Special Branch.

Again, in January 11 2025, a large quantity of Heroin No 4 worth Rs 97.90 lakhs was seized in Zote area Mizoram’s Champhai District, in an operation carried out by the Assam Rifles, in Collab with the Excise and Narcotics Department.

During September 2022, the NIA took a search operation at two location in Aizawl in a case pertaining recovery of explosive items of 2,400 kg, including 1,000 detonators and 4,500 meters of fuse wires.
