Khalid Jamil Chosen as India Men’s Football Team Head Coach

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has appointed Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the senior men’s national football team, marking the first time in over 13 years that an Indian will lead the side.

Jamil, 47, is renowned for his historic I-League title win with Aizawl FC in 2017 and for guiding NorthEast United FC to the ISL playoffs in 2021. He succeeds Spaniard Manolo Marquez, whose tenure ended earlier this month.

AIFF officials said Jamil was chosen from a shortlist that included Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic. His familiarity with domestic football and successful track record at the club level were key factors behind the decision.

Jamil’s first assignment will be the CAFA Nations Cup starting August 29, followed by Asian Cup qualifiers in October. His initial contract is expected to run for two to three years, depending on team performance.

The appointment is seen as a major boost for Indian coaching talent and a step toward building a stronger national identity in football.
